Throughout the week we encountered many chapter readings, but the on that intrigued me the most was “The Three Sisters”. In the chapter, author Robin Wall Kimmerer mentions there is the gift of corn, squash, and beans. Kimmerer explains how they all use each other in different ways to slowly grow into special. One quote that really stuck out to me was when Kimmerer stated, “Plants tell their stories not by what they say, but by what they do.”(128) This quote may not seem much to some people, but it really sticks out for me. My dad always told me growing up, “If somebody ever doubts you, don’t fight back with words. Use that as motivation and do something with it. Years later they will realize how much they messed up because of your success.” I feel that this is somewhat similar because you can only witness growth in something or someone through action. For example, in the movie Forrest Gump, everyone thought of Forrest as weird, unsuccessful, and different. Mainly because of the way he spoke but throughout his “actions” in life, he was a very successful person having many life accolades such as war veteran, owner of Apple Co., owner of a shrimp company, ping-pong world champion, and an All-American College football player. Also, last class someone mentioned how the gardner (human), is considered to be the 4th sister. I thought long and hard about that for some reason and I believe that the gardner is the mother of the 3 sisters. The gardner has to nurture the “baby” when it is only in seed stage. Then we see the vegetable begin to sprout which is it’s childhood. When the plant is almost ripe and the appropriate color you can consider that the adolescent years. And finally, when the plant is fully grown that is considered to be an adult. So the gardner to me is considered a mother, much more than a sister. And just like any child of an aging mother, they take care of them. Well, when the plant is an “adult”, the plant takes care of the gardner by giving them a meal or nutrients of some sort.
