Class ended this week by wrapping up Fukuoka’s book, The One Straw Revolution. Professor Santos read us the final note Fukuoka left to his readers, which was inspiring and resonating. After taking some time to reflect upon Fukuoka’s words he left with his readers, it is easy to conclude that he was so happy with his life due to the way he carried it.

Fukuoka wrote how he ultimately decided to leave society and live with the land in the mountains, and his farm. Once he was able to rid himself of society, he was able to blossom into a much happier person. This message is something I plan to take with me in my life. When one no longer depends on societal approval, they no longer have worry. Society is a damaging collection of pressure an judgment, ready to attack anyone that does not fit inside their lines.

As I grow older, I am constantly learning and reminding myself that life is only temporary, and our days on earth are not promised. With this notion at hand, I strive to see the positive in each day and live my life for me. At the end of the day, this is my life to live, and I do not want to have regrets. Fukuoka was pleased at the way he chose to live, and being happy is the ultimate goal in my life, whether society approves or not.

  1. I agree with the point you made about life and how our society is judgmental. Fukuoka has made his point on how he is happy with his life because he lived his life for himself and not for the views of society.

  2. I relate a lot to your comment about how as you grow up you realize life is so temporary and to just focus on taking a day at a time. Being happy day to day is my goal as well, it is a good way to live!
