Blog post

This week we continued to discuss the philosophical view of nature that Fukuoka talks about with the cycle of nature and how when it dies there is a new beginning. On Wednesday we shifted the focus to a more crude way of viewing nature. The film we watched on Wednesday gives a good insight on how it is like to live off of the land whether your a big game hunter or a mushroom picker. Throughout my life I have seen a couple of deer being skinned and it wasn't too horrifying, but the whole roadkill obsession they have down there is a little gross. I would love to hunt my own food and pick my own mushrooms like most of the people we watched, but you couldn't even pay me to attend a roadkill pageant. Aside from that, their way of life seems a lot more enjoyable and kind of simple at the same time. Personally I do not trust most of the food I eat so along with living a more nature oriented life I feel as if their food is a lot more fresh and healthy overall. Most of the food I have eaten that was hunted by someone I know was way better tasting to go with with the health factor. Watching this video just made me happy knowing their are still some people out their enjoying nature on a daily basis instead of spending their time in more industrial areas. Their way of life just seems more genuine and if you grew up around all the gross things that come with hunting your own food than it wouldn't be bad to live that kind of life. I think If I could get over the roadkill and skinning animals, I could definitively live in that environment.

  1. I like the fact that you chose to write about the video and about their hunting and gathering lifestyle. Coming from a hunting family and growing around the environment of killing and skinning animals to be used for food, I can vouch for the fact that a person gets used to it and would prefer that fresh source of food over anything that one can get at the grocery store. This was a great post but I would maybe add a quote or two from the book that ties in with the video that we watched.
