Soil Cycle
This week we ended our class on Friday by viewing a PBS film, Food Forward. In this film episode, it dealt with the issues regarding poor soil quality and how as a result, food grown in this soil has less nutrients to make consumers healthy. The episode showed how some farmers have taken action in combatting this major issue using different manure and compost methods,  hoping to revert back to healthy soil. If we have healthy soil, we will have a healthy harvest, and thus healthy humans.
As someone who gardens, learning about soil quality is always interesting to me, as I want  the best food for my family and I when I harvest. Last summer, I had grown a very abundant harvest. My soil had been treated with aged chicken, duck, and turkey manure, tilled into the soil over and over. I was amazed that when taking care of the soil, replenishing the earth with essential nutrients, I was helping my plants grow.
As gardening season approaches this year, I have opted to purchase non-GMO seeds, and prepare my soil for the planting time. I plan to add leaves, eggshells, and manure to my soil bed so when I plant, I have ensured that I am growing the best food to sustain my family.
