In the book “Eating the Landscape” by Enrique Salmon, Salmon talks about farming and how different kinds of farms work and contribute to different things in different ways. He talks about the culture and how food plays a very big part of indigenous peoples cultures because of the many different types of farming that they do. At the beginning of the book Salmon talks about how food was such a big part of his life and culture growing up, “Food was an essential ingridient at all of our family gatherings. It blended with music, teasing, laughter, stories, and dancing to create a delicious, pungent celebration….Once it was decided that a celebration was in order, someone would soon ask, ‘What are we going to eat?’”(4). Food plays such a big role in so many people lives and they may not even know it. No matter what kind of culture you come from everyone has different ways of preparing their food and they have different dishes that they make. I think Salmon shared this experience with his readers at the beginning of the book so that he emphasizes the importance of food in his life and makes his readers realize how important food is to all different people.
I believe that a big strength of this book was how well it flowed and how all of the points he made throughout the book connected to the main idea that he was trying to tell his readers. I also liked how Salmon added pictures to show his readers where different foods come from and how they are prepared and how much work goes into making all different kinds of foods year round.
I enjoyed this book and learned a lot about how many different kinds of foods there actually are in the world and how big food is to different parts of peoples cultures. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is interested in learning about how all kinds of foods are prepared and where they come from and how they are grown and different things like that. This book really emphasizes how big food is to many different cultures and it shows that the possibilities with food are endless and so many people know so little about such a big part of their lives.
