Blog Post #7
In class on Friday, we watched a
video about the soil and how it is not the same as it was decades ago. It is
losing the carbon that is helpful for the nutrients that the crops take in and
then once they are harvest, we eat. There was a statistic mentioned that today,
we would need to eat 8 oranges, in order to get the same amount of vitamins in
1 orange when our grandparents were growing up. It is crazy that this has
happened over the past few decades.
Before watching the video, I really wasn’t
aware of the problems we have created when it comes to soil and the levels of
carbon the soil contains decreasing. I found it interesting about the different
methods that some farmers mentioned in the video were coming up with. They were
talking about adding human waste and animal waste to the soil to help make a
rich soil and to add more nutrients to it. This video has opened my eyes on the
problems in the soil and the levels of carbon in the soil. I believe that if we
work together, we could be able to help the levels increase in the soil. Maybe
not to the levels they used to be at when our grandparents were growing up, but
it’s a start.
