Cultural Food
This week our food projects were due. We were assigned to make a recipe that had to do something with our heritage, and then talk about its origins. I made an english dessert called eton mess which consisted of whip cream, strawberries, and graham crackers. It was interesting to find different foods that have to do with my family. My family does not really have any food traditions, so to be able to see what my ancestors ate, or what other polish and english families eat was cool. It was also nice to see that other families have traditions, and how the food that they made really brings everyone together.
This project ties into the book that we just finished called Eating The Landscape by Enrique Salmon. In the book he talks about how your environment plays a huge role in what you eat regularly. Your environment is not just your location, but also the people that you live with. Obviously where you live determines what can be grown, and what kid of access you have to different foods. But the people you are around has just as much of an impact. If you are always with your family then maybe more home cooked meals will be made, and then that plays into family traditions.
Hi Meghan! First of all, your food was delicious. Secondly, I liked how you described that "your environment is not just your location, but also the people that you live with." It makes you become more aware that it's not only the environment that can impact you, it's also people that you surround yourself with. Aside from watching for formatting, the only other critique I have is maybe adding a quote that stood out to you from a discussion, reading, or video. Other than that great job!
