This week in class we discussed storytelling. We discussed a quote from Eating the Landscape that reminded me of my family. I can remember sitting around a table listening to my parents and aunts and uncles discussing their life growing up. These stories always come with a life lesson of some sorts. These stories help me understand my relatives in a way I never thought. They help me view them as normal people and not just my parents. One story they always tell is when they left school for a week and went to New Orleans for Mardi Gra, without telling my Nana. This story always makes me laugh because of crazy it was and how they avoided getting caught because there was no caller ID back then. From this story, I learned that my parents especially were kids too and that they made poor decisions too.

Storytelling “is a continuum of our human legacy” (60).By listening and remembering my parent's stories I will be able to tell these stories for them when they are no longer here to tell it themselves. The story of my mom, dad, uncle, and aunt sneaking to New Orleans for Mardi Gra will live on forever. This quote makes me wonder what story about me will live on forever. What story or stories will be used to describe who I was as a person? I think it is my job to create amazing stories and then make sure I tell them so I can always be remembered.

  1. I agree with you Kristina! Storytelling is a huge aspect of food and growing up and having all these special stories told to you makes food just that much more special!
