In Braiding
Sweetgrass, by Robin Kimmerer, the chapter that caught my eye was “The Gift of
Strawberries”. In this chapter the
author talks about almost all the gifts that she had given, or had received were
homemade because they just gave it more meaning. She says on page 24, “In our family
the presents that we gave were almost always homemade. I thought that was the definition
of a gift: something you made for someone else.” From this story I can somewhat
relate to it because of a tea cup my grandmother made. When she was young she made
a clay tea cup and painted it and gave it to her mother. Her mother ended up
loving it and as years went on she ended up making more and more. With these
she never sold one she always gifted them and told everyone to keep the tea cup
and pass it on. Each tea cup was different in its own way whether it was the
style of the cup or the paintings that were on them. The cups she made were
meant to be special, unique and give a special meaning to whoever would be receiving
it.
