Due for a Change

I usually don't like to engage in the topic of politics, but it upset me to hear that Professor Santos didn't win in her city election. I agree with something that was stated in class, someone said that it is a good thing when new people get elected. I think that this is a solid point because when new people are elected, hopefully things could end up changing for the better. When a council of people who have been re-elected for say 10+ years, of course they must be doing something right, but I strongly believe that change can be for the better. When the same council members have been in their position for this long, the same ideas are going to be handled in the same way they always have been and things may not change. But, if a new member of a city council was elected, they could either bring forth new ideas, or make a difference with the ideas already present. A fresh face in city council would more likely be beneficial than not because they are different than what the people are used to.

I can vouch for this but on a much lesser scale. My senior year of high school I ran for the position of senior advisor on my high school student council. I had never been on the council prior to this year and was running against someone who had been on the council for 2 years. Eventually, I ended up winning the election and that shows that people in our grade wanted to see change. The council consisted of everyone else who got re-elected except for me and one other girl. Within the student council, I was able to offer new ideas for the pep rally and spirit week. Even though high school student council isn't a big deal, it just comes to show that when new people are elected for positions, good will come out of it.

  1. I agree. The political system, in America, or even anywhere is a tough thing to think about. We all say we want change but personally I think a lot of people are afraid of it, just because we have so many preconceived ideas jammed into our heads constantly. Maybe it is just who I surround myself with but I believe our generation is a little more open to change than others.

  2. The amount of people who vote in local elections is terribly underwhelming, which absolutely breaks my heart. We as Americans have the most power in our local courts, yet we very rarely utilize it. Even on a larger scale, many people re-elect long-standing candidates into Congress or the House of Representatives merely because they've been there for so long. We as a nation definitely need to get more involved with our political system and start putting full attention into politics on all levels.

  3. So many people are scared of change even when we really need the change. This is part of the reasons that many controversial issues are even controversial at all; because people are afraid of change. People cling to ideas and political systems that are flawed and are not even open to the idea of reevaluating things.
