Silent Spring Book Evaluation
Throughout the
book Silent Spring's author Rachel Carson was writing to try and make people
aware of pesticides and the harmful effects that they could potentially have.
Carson explains in the book how the harmful chemicals used for plants was
harmful to not only animals but humans as well. The inhalation or contact with
skin was potentially cause cancer in humans. This really hit home for Carson
because of her own battle with cancer throughout writing the book.
Carson being a woman speaking out
against society was shocking to most people and was not condoned, but this
fueled her even more to write the book and, so she could speak her mind. It
seemed to me as though she had a passion for her work and that really inspired
me I’m sure as well as others. This book, as you can tell from the title Silent
Spring, she has the reader imagine what the world would be like without animals
and humans in it. She gives an example of the birds that everyone hears in the morning
when they wake up and how if we did not hear that in the morning how quiet it
would be. These pesticides could have potentially brought disease and death
among so many people if she has not acknowledged the problem and made everyone
aware.
From the Guardian I read another
review and it basically sums up what Silent Spring has done for this world
past, present, and future. It says, “…, Silent Spring would be most people’s
clear choice. Its impact was immediate, far- reaching and ultimately life-
enhancing.” To sum that up Silent Spring was written by an author not just to
sell a book or to talk about something that doesn’t matter and has no relevance
to the world, but it was written by Rachel Carson a well- known author who was
passionate about her work and did not stop relaying her message up until the
day she died. Without her great persistence and knowledge who knows where the
world would be or if there would be anything left in it. A huge thanks to such
an empowering woman who I truly idol, I strongly believe everyone should
educate themselves with her book.
