Book Evaluation

Rachel Carson who was a researcher based on her environmental surroundings. Carson who wrote and published the book “Silent Spring” in 1962 found many reasons as to why plants and living things were dying out so quickly. In the beginning of this book Carson started talking about how nice and beautiful the environment was but until the agricultural world started using pesticides. Pesticides are substances used on plants to exclude any insects and any harmful thing from ruining the plants and crops. Carson explained that when pesticides are sprayed on plants these chemicals expand and kill of sources humans, plants, animals and insects need. For example when pesticides are sprayed, insects that are eating from the plants are eating diseases then when animals are eating these insects the disease is now inside the animals. Knowing America we like to eat meat which comes from animals. These diseases are now being carried into humans because we are now eating these meats. Carson has a list of why pesticides should not be used in any shape or form. For example Carson mentions, “Arsenic, the environmental substance most clearly established as causing cancer in man, is involved in two historic cases in which polluted water supplies caused widespread cancer” (Carson 71) Just by feeding the air, these chemicals accumulate and form stronger diseases and cancer cells in our body. The perks of Carson writing and publishing this book, was that someone and I learned something new. To be honest I did not even know what pesticides were. Carson is trying emphasize that we should leave nature the way it was, because it is natural growing plants and crops we should embrace it. Not only is she trying to protect our nature but she is trying to protect our internal bodies from being sick all because of a man made chemical.
