Bird Song

What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear birds outside? Do you think of a happy memory or are you just annoyed because it may be way too early for anything to be up? Personally I think of my grandparents and all the times I used to go over there when I was younger. When I was growing up, my grandparents owned five different kinds of birds. The first thing I would hear when I walked into their house was the birds getting excited because there was a new person in the house. I associated every bird I heard with my grandparents. It reminds me of such an easy time in my life.

Whether you associate birds with a happy memory or a bad one, a huge part of the world would be missing if there were no longer birds on earth. I never knew that there was a time in the world where birds almost didn't exist. When we read "And No Birds Sing" my heart broke when I read that birds were dying because of the different chemicals that were purposely being put into the air. What made it worse was that people knew what was happening to different species of birds, but they couldn't do anything to stop it. It upsets me so much knowing that species of birds had to almost die out before the government changed its mind about DDT and all the other chemicals that were getting either blown into the air or distributed out into the water.

So the next time I get annoyed by the birds' loud noises I'm going to remember what I read this week and remember that I may have never had the chance to ever hear the beautiful noises that they make.

  1. I completely agree with you that it would have been horrible to not be able to hear the birds sing and enjoy what they bring to the environment. I was really upset that many people noticed that the birds were being hurt by the chemicals and letting the government know, but the government did not care until it started to reflect badly on them.
