Food Deserts Should Be Illegal

            How in this day in age are food deserts a major issue for people in our county? It should be illegal for there to be no access to food in poor areas. Its aggravating knowing that supermarkets fear the inner poor areas of a city and would choose to not open in those areas. How are people supposed to get out of tough situations when just getting food on the table is a full time job? Outside of working long hours, there are some people who have to travel over an hour one way on public transportation for their groceries. If public transportation is not available to these people they will often times be forced to walk. How is this an equal opportunity? Why should a working person have to pay for transportation just to spend even more at the grocery store? If access to food was within the distance of many of these poor areas poor people could spend the money they save on their families. There is just so much reason to support making food deserts illegal. I understand that poor areas have crime but if safety is the concern then have guards to monitor the stores. You cannot strip an entire society of people of access to food. Especially when that society is already struggling.

             Reading about how much money these families have to live on is scary. Groceries are so expensive in this day and it is hard to imagine how many of these families survive between all the expenses in life. Why is it that some people should have to choose between heat and a healthy meal? There must be a change. If we really want to help people and create a happier environment in poor communities then we should focus on keep everyone full. A "hangry" society certainly cant be a happy one.
