Imagine our land as a person. The ground as it’s feet and the sky as its head. Now, would you treat a person like we treat our land? Would you throw trash at the land if it could throw it back at you? Would you purposely blow poisonous smoke and air at them, if you knew that you could kill them? The land has to be treated with respect in order for the people living on the land to survive and flourish. The idea of land is bigger than the idea of human beings. Without land, humans would not have a place to live, however our government and its people have been treating our land very poorly for the past century.
Rachel Carson was a former biologist who left the field to focus on ending the use of pesticides, and helping our land. She found that the chemicals used in the pesticides were extremely dangerous, and were killing animals. Why would anybody put chemicals into the air that you wouldn’t want to breathe in? She decided to quit her job in biology in order to write a book. In the book she stated that in order to fix the pesticide issue the government needs, “...use less toxic chemicals so that the public hazard from their misuse is greatly reduced” (Carson 184). Carson fought extremely hard to protect our land from the chemicals. She strongly believed that our land does not deserve to be treated as poorly as the government treats it.
There are many things that we do to destroy the land we live on. Hence the fact that we live on the land, not that the land houses us. The land is not ours to abuse, yet for years all we have done is torture it. Whether it has been the cars driving on the land’s highways spouting out poisonous air to the sky, or pesticides being blasted onto the ground dissolving into the earth, the land does not deserve to be treated as poorly as it has been. People need to take a step back and appreciate the earth. Stop and look at the little subtleties that the land provides us, and appreciate the wonders provided by the land. If people notice the little things, hopefully they will stop destroying the land we live on, “Did you ever stop to notice; This crying Earth, these weeping shores?” (Michael Jackson).
I thought it was very creative of you to create the earth into a person, it was a very clear form of imagery. I also agree with you on the way that humans treat the earth since we really do not see how harmful we are to such a peaceful thing. I think we are so involved in material things and being superior that we get caught up in life and how much life has industrialized that we do not see our impact or how ungrateful we are to the simple things.
ReplyDeleteI also thought it was very creative of you to create the earth into a person, it was very imagery. but also the few questions you ask makes the readers really think about it, well at least it did for me. Personally, I do not approve of not taking care of our land but i defiantly believe people don't realize that even littering is hurting the environment but very good point.
