Revelation

After reading the excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath, I began to think more about how we treat nature. I began to think that maybe industry has gone too far and we have allowed big businesses to destroy nature to acquire an unnecessary amount of product then sell to the consumer. This also brings up the thought that if the average consumer does not pay attention to where or how there product was acquired. We then allow these large industry to continue destroying our land and environment.

  1. You're right in saying that the average consumer does not pay attention to where or how the their product was acquired. But change is on the way. For example, this class we are all taking is helping to spread awareness, and it is saying that you should be able to know what is in your products that you buy. Whether it is manufactured goods or food, industries are changing to meet the demands of the consumer. Think about the organic aisle of most grocery stores. Ten years ago that section would have covered a fraction of an aisle. Now if look at it today, you will realize that stores are rapidly expanding their natural and organic section to meet the demands of the people. Many people are "waking up" and beginning to care where the food that they buy comes from.

  2. I agree, this is also relates to the quote on the syllabus about the powerful and powerless. If we continue to allow these businesses to consume the Earth, we are not remaining neutral, we are contributing to the problem. The Earth is powerless against the businesses and we continue to allow the businesses to take advantage of it.

  3. I completely agree, just going out and buying food thoughtlessly, like most people do, has a big effect on the power we give to big businesses. If we consider where our food comes from more before we buy our food, we would have more of a say in where in what businesses (farmers/ industries) would benefit more from what we buy.

  4. I agree with what you are saying. Our government is beginning to become careless with the price they are willing to pay for building their businesses. We need to consider the long term affects of our actions and try to be more conscious of the decisions we are making.

  5. I agree and also know that I can sometimes be at fault for not taking nature into consideration. Even the fuel from our cars is affecting our earth. I really do believe the people of this world are so industrialized and forget about the true planet earth we are living on. We all need to connect with nature in some way shape or form. Nature needs to be appreciated more often. People need to open their eyes and be aware of what is really around them and maybe we could change the relationship many people have with nature.

  6. I see where you are coming from, our country is mainly built around the process of business. Anything to to get that next dollar. I agree completely that it is careless of our government to just overlook food and try to get money the easiest they can. This is an unfortunate reality.
