Hunting

This week, as with every week, we talked about nature and food and the relationship between the two. We watched a video in class that had a twist about food. There was this fair hosted in West Virginia that was called the Roadkill Cookoff. Seeing the video was very fascinating, I enjoyed seeing what everyone had to cook. The culture down south is so different. Hunting is such a huge activity that many children are taught to hunt at an early age, pr were at least exposed to the culture. I grew up in Holly Springs, North Carolina. We lived in a nice neighborhood called Sunset Ridge, right outside of Raleigh. I remember my brothers friends would often talk about guns, but we were not subjected to much of the hunting culture. I have never tried any of the exoitc meat that was mentioned in the video such as squirrel or deer.
When I was living in Maine I was subjected to hunting/killing animals much more than North Carolina. I had multiple friends that would go home on a regular basis during hunting season. My friend Mariah would travel about an hour to her grandparents camp, and would wake up at 5 in the morning to prepare for the day. She would gather her equipment, as she has her hunting license, and go into the woods with her grandfather and wait for deer to come. If she was lucky enough to see or shoot one, she would bring it back on her grandfathers truck, and would skin it in the same fashion as the video we saw in class. Then her and her family would eat the meat that they cut off of the deer.
I think that hunting for food is really fascinating, and what is even more interesting is my friends respect for the animals they hunt. It is all a big circle of life.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your blog post. My boyfriend is a hunter and I too find hunting for food very fascinating. At first I wasn't fond of the idea but then I realized the over population of animals. I liked how you incorporated the personal story about your friend Mariah and used the video to describe how she skinned the animal.
