One-Straw
Revolution Book Evaluation
In class we read the book The One-Straw Revolution, by Masanobu Fukuoka. In this book the
author talks about agriculture, farming, techniques, and the knowledge that
people have when it comes to food and what they eat. He also shares with us
many of his own experiences through his life and his thoughts on these
subjects. One of his main points in this book was his “Four Principles of
Natural Farming”. In this he explains that we do not need cultivation, no
chemicals or fertilizers, no weeding, and no dependence on chemicals. He
explains how all of this works and how it is much better for not even just the
crops but, it is safer for whoever will be eating it later. During this when
talking about the farmers he says, “Humans work best when they work for human
good, not for the “higher production” or “increased efficiency” which have been
the nearly exclusive goals of industrial agriculture.” I think that this was a
good point because there are some farmers out there that grow and farm their
crops whichever way they can to sell them. But, I do also think that there are
some farmers that love what they do and grow things the way they should for
human good. I thought this book was very educational and interesting to read. I would recommend this book to anyone that
enjoys farming, the environment, or wanting to learn more about farming and
techniques.
