Soil has been circulating through my family for many generations. We dump old lawn trimmings, leaves and old plants in the woods to be composted. When we watched a film on composted soil, it made me think of the soil my family uses in their gardens at home. My father, uncles, and cousins all have gardens but the best garden on my street is my grandfathers. His garden can grow anything. Corn, squash, eggplant, basil, tomato and cucumber to name just a few vegetables he grows. My family believes he has the magic soil because of the composted soil within the garden. After every growing season my family burns all of the left over crops so the nitrogen and other chemicals of the burnt crops can be mixed in with the soil. He has added many layers of the compost on top of years of burning crops in his garden which has resulted in a very rich soil great for growing any plant. Having gardens up and down my street is a very Nice because I know I have fruits and vegetables at my fingertips that I know were grown naturally and organically.
Watching videos such as the one in class on Friday really makes me wonder why more farmers are not taking advantage of composted soil. If the results show for the industrial farmers as obtaining more yield from the crop, why can't all farmers incorporate manure and other natural substances?
Peter, we also compost in my family.
