Book Evaluation

The second book we read in class this semester was Eating the Landscape by Enrique Salmon. I would say the subject was the relationship between people and food and how important food can be to everyday life, and the genre was a cookbook. The author expresses his thoughts throughout the book by using stories and past experiences to display his message to the reader. He shows how food is crucial in everyday life, and how your identity is the foods you eat. I think this book had more strengths than weaknesses, due to the fact that food is a big part in my life. I related to many things he talked about and agreed with some of his points. I did not agree with his notion that your food is your identity. Many people today strive to try different foods that are different from their cultures. While I enjoy my Italian cuisine, I also eat foods from other cultures which is why I think you can't judge someone or stereotype someone depending on what they eating. Overall, I did not mind reading this book. I related to the story telling aspect and the importance of storytelling. My dad always read from this Book of Virtues which has many strong messages. I agree with the importance food has in daily life and the reasons for preserving the land we live on. I would recommend this book to anyone who understands the importance of food and the different ways it can be used to bring people together. I think my mom would like this book because she has a garden and really enjoys cooking food for the family. Shes passing her traditions onto me and I will continue to be a family oriented person that loves nightly dinners with the best food around.
