This week in class, we watched a 25-minute video on farming in urban areas. In the video, they interviewed various farmers from New York City, New York and Detroit, Michigan. Watching this video made me think of the garden that my mom and I tend to and the produce that we grow within it. Every spring, my mom and I would go out into our yard with our rototiller and rototill the soil some time before we plant the seeds. We then dig some holes to plant each plant in their allotted section that we have dedicated for them. I then go and grab the sprinkler after we cover each hole and place it in the center to water the seeds every day.
Eventually, we would have a plethora of produce to choose from. We have tall tomato plants at the center of the garden with onions and chives to the left of them. In the back of the garden is our eggplant and zucchini (some of my favorites) which usually grow to about a foot for us. While in the garden, I always like to pick some pieces of lettuce or some basil and eat it right then and there. I found that the produce in our garden tastes better than those we can purchase at the grocery store (and a lot more fun to grow them). I’m hoping to continue growing my own produce with my mom, and maybe my own children, every spring.
