Today in class, we discussed how the soil we use for planting is being depleted of their nutrients and some of the ideas that we can use to help save it. Harmful farming practices like over tilling and the use of chemicals is one of the main cause for the nutrients being depleted. As professor Santos mentioned in class today, it would take eating 8 oranges to get the same amount of vitamin A that our grandmothers would get from 1 orange.

During class, we also watched a 24-minute video titled SOS: Save Our Soil, which described some ideas that farmers can implement into their farming to help restore some of the nutrients that has been lost in the soil. One way that was described in the video was the use of Humus in their farms. Humus is a form manure that is made from the compost of humans that has been possessed just like regular manure to remove any pathogens that would be harmful for the plants and anyone who would consume them. Another way to help improve the quality of the soil is to avoid tilling the soil all together by spreading the manure onto the top of the soil to let the rain naturally allow the soil to absorb the nutrients. Hearing these facts and listening to the ideas to help the soil have inspired me to implement that into my own garden, not including adding Humus (which is a big no for me).
