Off Season Farming
On Monday we got into groups and looked at a packet, that had a list of foods and when they are typically grown. We then had to go through the packet and make a list of all of the foods that we have eaten in the last month. This was an eye opening experience for me. I did not realize how many foods that I ate that were grown out of season. For example, strawberries are my favorite fruit I eat them all the time. I never realized that they were usually grown in the spring and that they are grown out of season in the winter.
This concept is also talked about in the book One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka. On page 86 he talks about how off season farming is become more popular, and how people want fruits and vegetables that look good. When fruits are harvested earlier they have to use artificial sweeteners, preservatives, a coloring agent, and a wax solution on it. They also use multiple fertilizers and chemical sprays applied while it is growing in the fields. This causes the fruit to look better but it is taking away all of the nutritional value away from the food.
