Blog Post #6
The last two classes, we watched a documentary on farming. It was really interesting because so many people have assumptions about farming and how it can be bad, which yes, it can but there are also a lot of good farms. Many of the farms that were documented were family run, and there was one farm that caught my eye called "One Woman Farm," run by one woman hence the name. It really opens your eyes to the truth of the whole industry. Food on our plate is such a simple thing but there is so much hard work behind where our food was grown that many people don't think about. It takes farmers almost a year of hard work just to grow a season worth of crops. This is a 24/7 job and there are no days off. So much physical labor and time has to be put into a business like this. It is sad to see that some of these farmers struggle so much at certain times. Nobody sees the effort put into this industry which is so weird to me because food is a necessity and an everyday item we need to survive, you would think people would want to pay more attention to where their food came from. If more people were aware of what went into farming, I think maybe a lot more people would be interested in shopping at local farmers markets or supporting farming. It is important to have respect for these people because if it was not for them, we would not have food on our table. It really opened my eyes to see the hard work they put in. So many people work sitting inside all day and complain about their jobs, I think we should help to spread the ideas of farming as it is a very rewarding and healthy thing to get into. Watching this made me want to shop locally and healthy to support these farms. We all should spread ideas so these hard working farmers can get the respect they deserve.
