In today's class, we watched the PBS episode on local farming and fresh produce in cities and how it affects the people in the area. It really interested me that in big cities there are still places to grow crops, even on rooftops and abandoned buildings. I have never experienced the city style of fresh produce, but I do occasionally stop at the roadside farm stands on the Cape. In my town, there is a farm called "Crow Farm" which is where most of the locals go to get local produce if they want to branch out from what is at the grocery stores. Ever since I was a little girl my Nana, my mom, and I have always loved to stop at Crow Farm in the summertime to get our fruits and vegetables. I remember when I was around 7 years old I was in Girl Scouts group and our leader took us apple and pumpkin picking here. The cottage where you buy produce is so small, but if you go to where the actual farm is there is miles and miles of rolling hills decorated with apple trees and huge pumpkin patches. It was such a fascinating experience for me at such a young age because I had never done something like this in my little town. This little local farm will always be our favorite, but there are a few other farm stands that we enjoy as well. When my mom and I take drives down Cape to our cottage we always love to stop off at this little shack on the side of the road. This older man grows and sells his own produce all on his own so supporting a local business like this one is something we enjoy doing. I have noticed the prices of these local crops are a little more than what you would usually find in a grocery store, but there is something much more delectable about locally grown fruits and veggies. I definitely think that buying produce locally is worth the few extra dollars.

  1. I agree that it is definetly worth it to spend a few more dollars on fresh produce instead of going to a grocery store. I work at one, and I know that produce can either be really cheap or really expensive but despite that, farmers markets are a better alternative.
