Quotes

One quote we talked about in class was very powerful, “I think we share a primal urge to share memories as a way to mingle and reaffirm our suspicions and observations about what we know and suspect about the world and each other. Stories help human communities to restore and build upon collective memory and library of knowledge”.
Before Bridgewater State University, I was at University of Orono Maine, and before that I attended a community college 15 minutes from my home, called Middlesex Community College. I personally did not enjoy my experience at Middlesex Community College for one reason; lack of communication. I have always maintained the fact that I grow my ideas and knowledge off of other people's experiences and stories, whereas my brother Myles could absorb information in a book like a sponge. When I went from interacting with kids in my school every single day, for 6 hours a day, to entering a classroom just to leave without a word from my peers, my day became more difficult. I stopped having mass social interaction with my peers because everyone commutes to Middlesex, and is more there for the education than the socialization, which is understandable. And although a lot of kids were my age, the classrooms were fairly diverse in age groups. I wasn’t connecting with many people, and when I am not constantly interacting with people my age, it becomes much harder to get inspired and formulate new ideas. Hearing about people’s days, and what they do for a job, and learning about people always reminds me of something, or I hear of something I have never heard of which prompts me to research it. For example when I talk to kids who are also in college I ask what they plan on doing. Sometimes they say an occupation that I’m not sure exactly what they do, or if it sounds like something of interest to me I will look it up, and learn more about it. For me, interacting with people and hearing/sharing stories is how I learn the best, and get inspired.
