Milk Production

Being a girl growing up in the world that has many different kinds of organic or non-organic items that can be consumed, I've never really cared about what I put in my body. I especially didn't think about the process that went into producing milk and how it can differ from farm to farm. It was milk. The only thing I cared about was drinking it because my mom would tell me that I would grow if I drank it a lot (I was a very short, naive child).

Honestly, up until this week in my English class, the only thing that I really cared about when it came to milk was that it all came from adorable cows. I didn't think about how those cows were treated or what they were fed. I didn't think that whatever they consume would be transferred to me if I drank their milk. There are farms out their that don't treat their cows like they should. In Deeply Rooted, a man that Hamilton talked to named Harry Lewis told her that he believed that the cows should roam free and only eat grass from where they roam. I thought that that's what all milk companies do with their cows, but I learned that some cows are kept in a barn all the time and treated very poorly. The milk that we drink probably doesn't even come to us directly from the cow. They go to plants to be treated and then put on shelves in super markets for us to buy. I'm thinking twice the next time I go to pour myself a glass of milk.

  1. I totally agree cows should roam free on the pasture, this kept the cows at my school happy and well fed. It even made less work for us because they are pretty good lawn mowers. On a side note the milk you consume does not come directly from the cow, trust me you wouldn't like it. When it is sent out to be pasteurized the harmful bacteria are killed and the fat globules are broken down.... last time I saw chunky milk in a carton it went straight to the trash, however when it comes out of the cow it does have that consistency.
