We have grown up in a world where we are taught that all fruits and vegetables are healthy and nothing harmful can come from them. When we go to our jobs do we really know a lot of the materials we are using and what is in everything we use? We want to believe that the things we use everyday cannot harm us but that is not the case due to the carelessness of human behavior.
In class this week we learned about how much different chemicals on the Earth can cause an abundance of health issues, including cancer. A lot of these chemicals we are using are involved in our everyday lives and it showed us how many elements in our Earth can be deadly. While doing the readings it was shocking to find out that people such as chimney sweeps were developing cancer because of the arsenic that they interacted with in their daily lives. It is scary to think you are at risk no matter where you go or what you do, and there is not much you can do to stop it.
Cancer is becoming more and more common today and it is sad that again as we read 45,000,000 Americans will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime, and children are more vulnerable these days to developing cancer as well. It does make me wonder if all the chemicals we are learning about were just banned completely if it would help people. But it has been so long that a lot of these chemicals have a lasting impact on the world which is scary to think about for the future.
I agree that it is frightening to think that everything you do could be putting you at risk of developing cancer. It makes me wonder if there is even a point in trying to avoid it. I also wonder if it is even possible for us to reduce the number of carcinogens that people encounter in everyday life enough to make a difference.
ReplyDeleteI love some of the points that you brought up here, such as eradicating certain chemicals that do more harm than good. Although they are cancerous and effect everyone, we can't help but wonder what would happen in their absence. If we may really need them despite the harm they cause us, and its horrible to think that we have to continue to live like this.
