After reading the
chapters from The Omnivore’s Dilemma, I
immediately thought of how the food corporations have so much control over
everything that we eat. The chapters described how corn is heavily used because
it is cheap. Many of the things we eat are either made with corn products or
were fed corn. Many people do not change what they eat even when they do know
what they are eating and I am guilty of this. Even if people are not going to
immediately change their habits it is important to at least be allowed to be
aware of what you are eating. There are people that do not think genetically modified
food should be strictly labeled and this concept is insane to me. It is the food
corporations that put forth these ideas, but I can’t see how anyone that is not
a part of the corporations or being paid by them could be convinced to agree
with this and yet there are people that do. When senators voted in Washington
in 2016 on whether they supported legislation against strict GMO labeling, the
results were saddening. 63 senators voted against the labeling and only 30 voted
for the right to know what you are eating. The result of this vote was the
result of corporations in politics.
