In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s the United States was constantly spraying chemicals to try and eradicate the gypsy moth and fire ant. “ (‘Eradication’ means the complete and final extinction or extermination of species throughout its range…” (Carson 157). The department of plant pest control to so determined to get rid of these species, it didn’t matter if it affected the farms or humans in general. There was contamination of farm produce, because of these sprayings that happened to kill off the gypsy moths. With the contamination of produce, people were putting these chemicals in their own bodies. Health departments knew about the contaminations of these produces but would do little about it, so they would still be marketed.
It is sad to see that people knew that these farms were being contaminated by the spraying of chemicals and did not want to stop it. They were so stuck on killing these “pests” that it didn’t matter the affects it had. I believe that the earth is made the way it is for a reason and that all the species are here for a reason too. So the fact that we are trying to eradicate certain species because we as humans do not like them is not okay. First off by killing a specie, we are hurting the food chain that makes this earth survive. Also we are not only killing species, in a way we are killing ourselves by being exposed to such harsh chemicals. These chemicals that are in the sprayings are not meant to be ingested. Still we use them on farms in order to get rid of the pests.
I agree with what you said and I think it is unfair that the people that buy produce in stores don’t really get to know if it’s contaminated or not. There are certain numbers you can look at on fruits and vegetables that determine if it has pesticides, but it is still difficult to determine and very few people are even aware of this.
ReplyDeleteI also wrote about how people spray these pesticides just so they could get rid of one specific "pest" but they don't remember how much they are actually harming the rest of the world
