Many people in today’s society do not stop and think about what they are eating. We live in a society who runs on fast food because we are always on the go. Growing up I really never put thought into what I consume, until my sophomore year of high school. I became allergic to Fructose. I had to go through a huge diet change because I could not longer eat anything with corn syrup, High fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids, brown sugar, molasses, and splenda. Almost anything you pick up in the grocery store has one of these ingredients in it. Basically the foods I lived on for most of my life was cut out of my diet. I no longer could have granola bars, almost every brand of ice cream, ketchup, BBQ sauce, marinara sauce, breads, snack foods, and the list goes on. It was not only hard for me to adjust but my mom too because she had to buy all separate foods for me and make me special meals. This has changed my life forever and it made me watch what I eat.
In the Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan writes about how americans diet is basically all corn.     Most of the meat we consume is corn, because the animals on farms are fed corn. There is around 200 by-products made corn that are ingredients in the food we eat. In the Omnivore’s Dilemma pollan brings light to these things, he travels across the country to farms to see what farm life is like. In the first chapter pollan talks about the grocery store and how everything in the store is made out of corn but also most of the store itself is made out of corn by product. Many people are not aware of what they are eating, even if they think they are eating healthy, chances are they are just ingesting mostly corn or corn by products. It's crazy how one food can be made into so many different foods.
