On an every day basis I hear about someone either in the news, in my personal life, or on the street talking about cancer. Cancer has become such a talked about subject because of how prone everyone has become to cancer, whether it be brain, lung, throat, or any other kind of cancer. It is hard to imagine that it took all these years for scientists to find a cure for cancer because it has been around for such a long time. It makes me wonder if they were just keeping it secretive for a while because they believed the problem was not that serious until now when people started raising suspicions.
This week in class we finished up the movie on the author of Silent Spring Rachel Carson. While writing her book Carson dealt with her personal struggle with cancer. It must have been hard for her to be writing a book while being so sick, but she seemed like a strong-willed person who never gave up. dealing with cancer was not her only struggle however, being a woman Carson was always being judged and ridiculed for being a woman with an opinion. I look up to Carson because she did not give up her dream and pursued it until her death. I think she accomplished her goal in life and has educated many people on the harmful and possible cancer- causing pesticides that were used when she was growing up. Now researchers and scientists have taken precautions in the chemicals they use to treat plants. If Carson had not contributed her facts and opinions about harmful chemicals who knows how much worse cancer could have gotten around here.
I agree that cancer is all to common but yet the impact of the life changing news when someone is diagnosed, stays the same. It would be amazing if doctors and scientists within my lifespan could find a cure to at least one of the currently fatal types of cancer.
